More than a century later, the concept of transmitting electricity through air, developed by Nikola Tesla in the 1880’s, is starting to take its first commercial steps. Heralded as new miracles, mobile phone re-chargers as Powermat or wireless home electricity distribution suggested by WiTricity promise the consumer the prospect of cable-free energy.

Now this is being pushed further. Not only electricity wireless transmission is being worked to become a common place, but experimentations are under way to generated electricity from the surrounding air.

How? “Simply” by harvesting the radio waves that swarm around us generated by mobile phones, TV sets, radios, Wi-Fi’s.

Several experiments are under way, in several Universities but also in companies like Nokia and RCA, where energy is already acquired in small quantities to trickle-power small devices, such as a mobile phone.
